Lifeguards. Motorbikes, minibikes, etc. are allowed to enter the parking area ONLY if operated by a
licensed driver and only if being used as primary transportation to and from RVA. Recreational riding of
such vehicles in the parking area, tennis courts or on RVA grounds is strictly prohibited.
Party Policy
The RVA pool is intended for the use and enjoyment of its members and their guests. Parties, other than those including invitation to the entire membership, are prohibited on Saturdays and Sundays. Parties are also prohibited during morning swim team practice and swim meets. A party is defined as a gathering of six or more swimmers celebrating seasonal sports teams, birthdays or other family and religious events. Parties are allowed weekdays based on first come, first served availability and must be registered and reserved with the Pool Manager or the Pool Administrator. Last minute gatherings can be accommodated assuming that a party is not already scheduled and a lifeguard is not required.
A party fee of $25 is required to reserve the date, as well as a $50 refundable cleaning deposit. A nonmember guest fee of $5 per person applies. For every 10 non-member swimming guests, an additional lifeguard will need to be hired for a minimum of 2 hours. The cost is $50 per additional lifeguard.
The host family is responsible for complete and thorough cleanup of the party area including clearing of all decorations, washing off tables and benches and vacuuming/sweeping the floor. All party litter is to be disposed of properly with the trash bags carried out to the dumpster. Should the lifeguards have to clean up after a party, the cleanup deposit will be forfeited. Failure to comply with the party registration policy can result in a $200 assessment for the host member.
The host member is responsible for the conduct of his/her guests. All RVA Rules and Regulations apply.

Directors at a special meeting, but only after the member has been given reasonable time and opportunity
to present his/her position. Cause for such discipline shall include the violation of any By-law, or Rule,

POOL RULES AND REGULATIONS
Summer Season Pool Hours: 11:00am - 9:00pm daily
The Summer Season is from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. The Board of Directors will
determine annually the dates and hours for “early” and “late” season openings. The pool may be closed
from time to time for special RVA sponsored events, for required maintenance, and for swim team
practice or meets. Other adverse weather or health indications may require that the pool be closed for a
period of time to be determined by the Board of Directors or the lifeguards on duty.
In order to provide a safe and orderly swim environment, members and their invited guests or Care
Givers must comply with the following list of rules while applying principles of common sense to
5
address other unforeseen circumstances not specifically listed below. Close supervision, courteous and
respectful behavior should govern all actions.
Safety
Lifeguards are on duty for the purpose of maintaining general safety conditions in and around the pool.
Members are responsible for following all posted pool regulations, those included in this handbook and
all directives provided by the on duty Lifeguards. Failure to follow Lifeguard directives may result in
membership suspension, termination or fine. Please use good judgment and avoid distracting on duty
Lifeguards from their responsibilities.
The following is not permitted in and around the pool area:
1. Unruly behavior including pushing, running, dunking, wrestling or other acts that could annoy
or endanger others.
2. Children 18 and under in the pool during adult swim

1. There is no diving except from the diving boards (or swim blocks).
2. Only one person at a time is permitted on each diving board, including the steps.
3. No double bouncing.
4. There is no swimming under the diving boards when the boards are in use.
5. There is no diving with floats, goggles or masks.
6. Any person using the diving boards must be able to swim unassisted.
7. Children under age 8 must be accompanied by a parent at the high dive; the parent must remain
stationed at the bottom of the high dive until the child has completed his or her jump or dive.
Children’s Use
Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times while at the
pool. An adult shall be defined as a parent, family member, babysitter or registered Care Giver 18 or
over. The supervising adult must be able to clearly see and supervise the child at all times. Lifeguards
cannot substitute for supervising adults. One adult may be responsible for no more than four children
under age 8.
Supervising adults may not “drop off” or leave children under age12* nor may the adult engage in
activities which removes their direct attention from the child (i.e.: playing tennis while the child is
swimming). A swim team coach may not substitute for a supervising adult.
*Children age 8 to12 may utilize the facilities without adult accompaniment provided they have taken
and can show proof of passing the RVA basic swim test. This applies only when lifeguards are on
duty.
6
Children unable to swim must not be beyond under-arm depth water without a parent or designated adult
in the water within arms reach to them
Approved Swim Diapers
Children age three and under as well as children with unreliable toilet habits are required to wear
approved swim diapers. The approved diaper must be made of impermeable fabric designed specifically
for use as a swim diaper. These swim diapers must have tight elastic at the waist and legs to prevent
leakage. Disposable swim diapers ARE NOT APPROVED for use at RVA unless they are worn
beneath the impermeable swim diaper as is recommended for untrained children.
Note: Because of the level of excitement at the pool all children under age seven, whether trained or
untrained, are at risk of having an accident. It is the parent’s responsibility to take precautionary
measures with their children including using adult swim breaks to escort children to the restrooms.
Swim Competency Test
Children 8 and older may take the RVA swim competency test by scheduling the test with the Pool
Manager. Successful passing of the test permits children age 8 and older to utilize the pool without
direct adult supervision. The test and drop off privilege is not available to guests.
Weather
Weather conditions deemed dangerous for swimming will be determined at the discretion of the
lifeguard(s), however, the pool will always be cleared in the event of thunder or lightning. No one is to
use the pool when it is officially designated as closed or when no lifeguard is on duty.
Swim Team/Swim Lessons
During the summer season, RVA maintains a member children swim team and offers occasional
swim/stroke lessons for members only. For information about the swim team or stroke lessons given by
swim team coaches, contact the Swim Team Chairpersons. For non-swim team members, the lifeguards
may be available for swim lessons. Contact the Pool Manager.

maintenance, and for tennis clinics or tournaments.

their trash and debris after finishing play. No pets are allowed inside the fenced area of the tennis courts.

for tennis. Bare feet, sandals, flip flops and shoes that can mar the playing surface are not permitted.
GUIDELINES FOR TENNIS PLAY
Play is available year round to members in good standing provided one of the three circumstances exist at
the time of play:
1. the member has made a prior reservation and has appeared no later than 10 minutes following the
reservation start time to claim the court,
2. no reservation has been made and a court is “open” with no one waiting, and
3. a court is reserved but the reserving party has not appeared to claim the court and 10 minutes since
the reservation start time has expired.
Reservation Policy
1. Reservations may be made year round by members in good standing.
2. Reservations must be made by appearing in person to register in the reservation book located
outside the entry to the tennis courts. Reservations must include name, member number and
playing partner(s) indicating member or not.
3. A reservation is made for one hour for singles play and one and one half hours for doubles play.
4. Reservations may not be made on behalf of another member or by using other member’s names.
5. Each membership (husband, wife, children) is permitted to reserve one court for one hour per
day.
6. Doubles games may reserve one court for three hours provided two memberships are represented
(it is not permissible for a husband and wife to reserve back to back one hour court time).
7. Invited guests are welcome to play when accompanied by the host member and only after
registering and paying the guest fee. At least 50% of doubles players must be members.
8. A member may hold only one future reservation at a time. A future reservation may be made
only on completion of play on a current reservation.
Guidelines for playing on a “walk-on” basis are as follows:
1. Members and their invited guests are permitted to play tennis on a walk-on basis provided
unreserved courts are available and at least 50% of the players are members. Guests must be
properly registered and paid for as noted above.
2. Members playing on a “walk-on” basis must relinquish the court once any member holding
reservations appears to claim the reserved court, provided that the member holding reservations
is on time (the court is held for 10 minutes before forfeiture).
3. Members may play on a “walk on” basis as long as courts are available and as long as no one is
waiting to play. In the event another party without reservations is waiting to play, the first
party may play for one hour if singles play, or one and one-half hour for doubles play.
4. When entering the court on a “walk-on” basis, the member must sign in to claim the court for
the hour and to let other parties know when the court will become available.
Children’s Use
1. Only one court at a time may be reserved by any one membership.
2. Members under 18 may play tennis on an unreserved court on a “walk-on” basis. When entering
the court on a “walk-on” basis, the member must sign in to claim the court for the hour and to
let other parties know when the court will become available.
3. A reservation may not be made for basketball use.
4. If the basketball court is used on a “walk-on” basis, an adult member may claim the court
immediately for tennis play if the other court is occupied.
5. Children under age 12 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times while on the
tennis or basketball court.
Clinics and Lessons
8
Certain courts may be unavailable for reservation due to RVA sponsored clinics, lessons or special
event. Such events will be scheduled to minimize disruption and will be designated in the reservation
book at least 48 hours prior to the event. Existing reservations will be taken into consideration.
Clinics and lessons are available for members only.
Teams and Leagues
The organization, practice, scheduling or participation in leagues or teams including ALTA or USTA
must be approved by the RVA Board of Directors and only if deemed in the best interest of the entire
membership. Any ALTA or USTA teams must be comprised entirely of RVA members and use of
courts for such activities will not take precedence over other scheduled RVA activities. Any ALTA or
USTA play will be allowed only on weekdays before 6:00 pm.
Ball Machine
The ball machine is available for use to all members over 18. It is kept in the green metal box in the far
right corner of the courts. Use of the ball machine is limited to one hour following the same reservation
policy as for the tennis courts. The ball machine MAY NOT be removed from the tennis courts.
BASKETBALL RULES
Use of the Basketball Court is available for adult members both on a reservation or a “walk-on” basis
according to the same guidelines used for tennis. Use by children under 18 is restricted to a “walk-on”
basis only and may be terminated by an adult member wishing to play tennis if the other court is
occupied.
